I don’t know who Cailee Spaeny is, but my spellcheck already hates her. She is apparently a very young singer of some sort who, according to Variety, just won a lead role in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, probably because both her last name and Maelstrom have their “a”s and “e”s switched (according to my narrow and likely accidentally xenophobic spelling standards), and that makes them bros.
She will co-star with Star Wars’ John Boyega, who will play the son Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character from the original. No real word on who Spaeny will play. I like the idea of her taking over Charlie Hunnam's role. It's not likely, but if that turns out to be the case, I will be very happy.
We also don’t know much about what Maelstrom will focus on, plot-wise. It seems as though direct relations to the original will be few. Other than the robots and giant monsters, of course. Unless they’re doing away with those too. That might bum some people out.
More information is likely to come out soon, however, as the film begins production in November for an expected February 23, 2018 release date.
