Back in August the lovely and talented Siddhant Adlakha told us a bit about the rich history of Captain Marvel, and how the upcoming MCU film would have to do some picking and choosing from that history regarding the character’s origin. IF we even saw that origin, that is.
Today’s news suggests we can drop the “if”; Captain Marvel will be an origin story.
Speaking to Cinemablend, Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige said unequivocally: "Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It's an origin story from the start.”
That stands in contrast to, say Black Panther, whose origin story was nestled all cozy-like inside Captain America: Civil War, or Spider-Man 3.0, who was presented already in action, albeit as a novice, in the same film. So this will be the first full fledged origin story in the MCU since...Ant-Man? Is that what you kids consider a long time now? Sheesh. (EDIT: Wait! Dr. Strange! Why is this origin thing a big deal again?)
So if you care about this sort of thing, the news is not only will Captain Marvel get a new, probably streamlined backstory that cherry picks decades of comics material, but her (first?) film will in fact be that origin.
I don’t know about all this stuff, but I know what I like, and I like Brie Larson. So you nerds sort this backstory/origin stuff out and I’ll see you at the theater on March 8, 2019. I was hoping for actual replicants by then, but FINE.
