Rockstar made it official this morning: Red Dead Redemption is getting a follow-up. It's a sequel, it's called Red Dead Redemption 2, it arrives "next fall", and we're getting the first trailer for the game on Thursday morning.
Here's an official Rockstar tweet, saying as much:
As a fun little bonus, there's been a bit of an uproar from Twitter's more pedantic corners over the game's title, the general sentiment being: "Red Dead Redemption 2? Why, that bucks the naming convention established by Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption! How am I supposed to enjoy this game now?"
Presumably, these are the same people who had fits over Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King being referred to as "live-action". In both cases, I would urge these folks to find an adult, calm down, and enjoy the thing for what it is, rather than what the parent company behind the thing is calling it. Are you really going to care what title's on the cover box when you're sniping chumps from the back of your horse across Red Dead Redemption 2's beautifully-rendered canyons? I think not.
Anyway, BMD's gaming contingent is losing their minds with excitement over this, and can't wait to see that trailer on Thursday morning. Until then, let's speculate: think this'll be a prequel, or a sequel wherein you play John Marston's son? My money's on the former.
