There's a lot of history implied in The Empire Strikes Back between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. So ever since a Han Solo spinoff film was announced, it's was only a matter of time until we got our Lando. We heard whispers that Magic Mike XXL’s Donald Glover was in contention for the role back in August, sparking salivation in Glover-lovers and Star Wars fans alike, but had no official word from Lucasfilm.
Time to crank up the salivary glands to “monsoon season,” because today, Glover was formally announced as playing the charming, occasionally untrustworthy smuggler. He’ll join Alden Ehrenreich (fantastic in Hail, Caesar!), playing slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler Han Solo, under the dual directorial gazes of 21 Jump Street’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller, delivering dialogue by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. He’ll also join a lady actor whose identity we don’t know yet (but who we secretly hope is Tessa Thompson).
Lucasfilm’s press release says the film meets Lando “in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld” - so, before his rise to power as a Tibanna gas magnate. But if you’re worried that he won’t have his trademark cape yet, fear not. The release also quotes Lord and Miller as saying “these are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations.” Those scamps!
Given that the movie’s been described as an origin story for Han and Chewie, Glover had better prepare his best comic sad face, because chances are we’ll get to see the sabacc game in which Lando loses the Millennium Falcon. Or maybe we only know that story from a certain point of view, and it’ll be retconned to something a little less mortifying for poor Lando.
The as-yet-untitled Han Solo movie will release on May 25, 2018, potentially putting the Internet gif machine through its toughest test yet.
