Snake Plissken’s Countdown Watch Can Now Be Yours

Neck-injected explosive capsules (thankfully) not included.

We recently realized that we’re kind of unofficial wristwatch aficionados here at Birth.Movies.Death. Evan Saathoff sports his grandfather’s amazing, distinctive Seiko 5 6119-5400BMD life coach Noah Segan got the timepiece bug after falling in love with Steve McQueen’s iconic Heuer “Monaco.” Contributor Priscilla Page rocks the recent reissue of Ripley’s watch from Aliens. I gifted another site pal a vintage watch for their birthday, and their big takeaway was that they could now check the time during a movie without taking their phone out. Hey, whatever works. So who knows, maybe watches are due for a comeback among cinephiles.

As the resident Bond nerd, it was only a matter of time before a 007-related timepiece or two found its way to my wrist. This in turn sparked a larger interest in horology, especially iconic watches seen in films. This past year alone, I spent hours learning about the Zodiac Sea Wolf – the watch Arthur Leigh Allen was wearing when police interviewed him in 1971 about the Zodiac murders. I maybe have a saved Ebay search for Jason Bourne's Tag Heuer. I’m thinking about getting this vintage Pulsar from Live And Let Die. I might have a problem.

So when I heard someone was making a screen-accurate, licensed, working replica of Snake Plissken’s countdown watch from Escape From New York - well, I needed to know all about this. And I decided you needed to know all about this.

First off: I’ve seen a lot of Kickstarter videos, and that’s a hell of a job right there. Here’s what else the Ridgewood Watch Co. has to say about the project:

In John Carpenter's famous masterpiece, Escape from New York, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), has 24 hours to rescue the President from the country's largest prison — New York City. The United States Police Force gives Snake a gun, a two-way radio and a countdown watch.

The Lifeclock One is a fully licensed reboot of that watch but with a twist — it's a countdown timer of course, but it also tells the time, date and much more. Best of all — it pairs with your iOS or Android device to give you all of the alerts for all of the cool phone functions that Snake would have killed for — push notifications from your favorite apps as well as incoming call and text message alerts. You also get step counting, weather, world clocks, camera control, stopwatch and much more.

I’m not a "smart watch" guy, but I am a watch guy and I’m certainly a movie watch guy, and this one is just too tempting to resist. Will I ever wear it? Who knows. Will I back this project?

I did it 35 minutes ago.

Head to their Kickstarter page to see more pics, including some neat/limited variant editions. (Make mine screen accurate, obviously). The campaign is live so, y'know, tick tock.
