Here’s a secret: I watch the first two La La Land trailers way more than I should, especially for someone who’s seen the film. One’s set to “City of Stars” and the other to “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and they’re both suitably nostalgic and melancholy. This latest one, however, does a fantastic job of selling the film’s immense sense of joy and energy. Take a look:
What you’re hearing is “Someone In the Crowd,” and what you’re seeing is a distillation of the characters. Who they are, what they want, and how they bump heads with J.K. Simmons: the three most important questions for a movie by the guy who made Whiplash.
La La Land is one of the best films of 2016. It’s getting a limited release on December 9th before hitting theatres across America on the 16th. Be sure to check out my review from the Philadelphia Film Festival in the meantime.
