Tyler Perry To Produce English Remake Of Korea’s MISS GRANNY

No, probably not starring Madea.

Miss Granny is a South Korean comedy about an old lady who suddenly finds herself back in the body she had when she was 20. She does what any grandma would do - start a band with her grandson and try really hard not to bang him. Natch.

The film has been remade in Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Indonesian and Japanese. Now it can add English and Spanish to the list. It’s like the “Yesterday” of really silly sounding wish-fulfillment movies.

But that’s not why I’m writing about it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the English remake will be produced by Tyler Perry’s 34th Street Films.

You can see a lot of obvious avenues for this. Namely, that Madea will jump back into her 20-year-old body and destroy everything in her path. As far as we know, however, that does not appear to be the case.

In fact, Tyler Perry’s involvement may be minimal beyond just producing it. He won’t write it, for instance. That duty will fall to Melissa Finell. That right there is a red flag that this won’t be a typical Tyler Perry vehicle, if he appears in it at all.

Still, this is exciting news if only because it hints that Perry will remain in the film game a little longer. The guy took quite a sabbatical between Single Mom’s Club and this year’s Boo! A Madea Halloween. Even if he’s just producing, it’s nice to know he’s still out there instead of just making tons of unwatchable television.
