According to a new report over on Deadline, Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Crimson Peak) is finally getting into the superhero game ... though perhaps not with either of the established cinematic universes we have have expected.
Chastain will play the titular role in Painkiller Jane, in a new movie from Lotus Entertainment and Solipsis Films. If, like me, you're moderately unfamiliar with the character, here's a fairly thorough breakdown from Deadline:
Chastain, no stranger to playing tough female roles, will play Jane Vasko, a New York City street cop who gets recruited by the FBI to infiltrate a major NYC drug and human trafficking ring. In a near death experience, Jane develops exceptional regenerative abilities that give her a unique indestructible advantage. With nothing to live for and no way to die, Painkiller Jane becomes an unstoppable force of nature seeking revenge to those who destroyed her life as she leaves a path of death and destruction in her wake.
So Painkiller Jane's a supercop character? Sure, alright. Not the most interesting setup I've ever heard for one of these things, maybe, but what do I know? Painkiller Jane's been a successful title for like two decades, so surely there's something going on there, right? I'm not asking rhetorically, by the way, I genuinely don't know.
Right now there's no one attached to direct, write a script or co-star, but I imagine those pieces will begin to fall into place now that Chastain's onboard. We'll keep you informed as the updates roll in. While we're waiting, please sell me on Painkiller Jane in the comments below (or don't; I'm not the boss of you).
