Dane DeHaan visited Butt-Numb-A-Thon this weekend for an advance screening of Gore Verbinski's A Cure for Wellness (we're not allowed to review that movie yet, but allow me to say there is a LOT going on there), and he brought with him a few minutes of sneak footage for Luc Besson's upcoming labor of love Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
The footage wasn't a linear scene but rather a series of cuts, but what we saw was colorful and fun-loving. DeHaan's title character has a charming, energetic rapport with Cara Delevingne's Laureline, a character that DeHaan told us is red-haired in the comics, but Besson wanted to turn her into a blonde to avoid comparisons to The Fifth Element's Leeloo.
There will be Fifth Element comparisons, regardless, because Valerian appears to offer The Fifth Element's energy and kaleidoscopic take on science fiction. That's a good thing, right? I also saw some Guardians of the Galaxy visual influences, which is certainly nothing to complain about. The more colorful sci-fi and less steely blue-grey sci-fi the better. Lots of jokes here, too.
A highlight: definitely Ethan Hawke's showy space cowboy character, who isn't named on IMDb but I'm hoping is named Maurice. The costumes, overall, are insane in a really delightful way. There's a puffy weird space monster that will be a crowd-pleaser. But best of all: Delevingne kicks ass as Laureline. She seems like a very cool, tough character, one in a long list of hard-core Besson leading ladies.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is slated for July, but there appears to be some question whether that date is concrete. Here's hoping it doesn't get pushed too far.
