The last time we checked in with the Expendables franchise - a bromantic series of films concerning a team of sweaty, monstrously-veiny golems who punch, shoot and/or stab one another while wearing tactical gear and berets - the year was 2014. It was a kinder, gentler time.
Many of us thought that The Expendables 3 would mark the end of said franchise. As it turns out, we were wrong.
Splendid Film has picked up rights across German-speaking Europe for The Expendables 4, the final title in the action franchise starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
That's The Hollywood Reporter breaking the news that The Expendables 4 is on the way. THR goes on to say that this is intended to be the final installment of the franchise, though of course that plan will be immediately abandoned if The Expendables 4 turns out to be a blockbuster (the three previous films somehow earned a combined $800M at the worldwide box office).
As of right now, only Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger are said to be returning, but one suspects the production will have no trouble finding room for all the Expendables we know and love so well, including: Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Macaulay Culkin, Chuck Norris, Stanley Kubrick, the Sham-Wow Guy, Wilford Brimley, the ghost of Walter Matthau, every character from Veggie Tales, Vin Diesel, Lord Humungus, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Helen Mirren, Sam Saathoff, R. Crumb, Judge Reinhold, Charles Barkley, Pinhead from Hellraiser, Piers Morgan, the thing behind the dumpster in Mulholland Drive, Nick Nolte's neighbors, Bronson Pinchot, Darkwing Duck, Steven Spielberg, the CEO of Applebee's, The Rock, and R2-D2.
Nothing further to report at this time, but we have plenty of time to prepare ourselves for The Expendables 4's arrival in 2018.
