Here’s A Very BLADE RUNNER-y First Look At Duncan Jones’ MUTE
Today brings our first look at Duncan Jones' Mute, a darkly comic, science-fiction noir thriller starring Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux, Alexander Skarsgård and Seyneb Saleh. It looks, as our Millennial friends might say, Blade Runner-y af.
Let's take a look.
Our own Phil Nobile Jr. was on the set of Mute not too long ago, and has some insight into these photos for us. For one thing, producer Stuart Fenegan explained that Rudd and Theroux's chatty surgeons, Cactus Bill and Duck (respectively), are based on Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John from Robert Altman's M*A*S*H*. Back in 2009, Jones referred to these two as the film's "villains". Do with that what you will.
On a side note: one of these photos seems to contain a very bold clue as to the fate of the Sam Rockwell clones in Duncan Jones' first film, Moon. See if you can spot it!
Meanwhile, this photo - which really showcases that Blade Runner feel we mentioned earlier - gives us our first look at Alexander Skarsgård's Leo, who we can learn more about via the following official plot synopsis:
Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo's search for her takes him deep into the city's seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.
As you know, Mute has been picked up by Netflix, and will premiere on the streaming service sometime later this year. Trust us when we say you want to be very, very excited about this movie. There may be more going on here than meets the eye.
