Last August, we heard that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was getting (another) remake, to be headlined by Rebel Wilson (at the time, we braced ourselves for the coming of the ScoundrelBros, but no ScoundrelBros ever arrived).
All's been quiet on that front ever since, but we've just been handed an update, via the good folks at The Hollywood Reporter:
Anne Hathaway is in talks to join Rebel Wilson in MGM's remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to be titled Nasty Women.
The new take on the 1988 comedy (which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine) will feature two women from different walks of life teaming up to con a tech prodigy out of his money.
Yes, the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake is now a twofer starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, and will henceforth be known as Nasty Women. One wonders where screenwriter Jac Schaeffer (who's handling the script on this one) may have come up with that title. Perhaps it came to him in a dream; perhaps it came to him via a nightmare being televised to the entire world. We may never know.
Anyway, I'm not particular hot on this comedy pairing, but you know me - I'm the guy who likes to shrug off remakes (yes, even when they're being built around beloved classics that I've watched and rewatched a bazillion times). If it's great, great. If it sucks, well, we've always got the Martin/Caine classic to fall back on. Think about it that way and you'll realize there's no real way to lose here.
Nasty Women doesn't currently have a start date, but we'll keep you informed as updates roll in. Please take this opportunity to revisit Frank Oz's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at your earliest convenience. You'll be happy you did.
