We’ve known for a while that Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields were going to write the next Godzilla movie, and with that knowledge came an assumption (or an assertion, if you’re ScreenCrush) that Dougherty would also direct.
Now, way later, it’s official. According to Variety, Michael Dougherty has officially joined the film as director. This means that in addition to fighting mainstay characters like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, Godzilla will also have to contend with tiny cute things that are also evil and dangerous.
I think this is good news. I would prefer to have Gareth Edwards back (I think Godzilla is amazing and super underrated, just in terms of giant monster moviemaking), but that clearly wasn’t in the cards. Dougherty, will likely make a fine replacement. Am I wrong for thinking this means we’ll get an ever so slightly more humorous take on my main man Godzilla? We’ll have to wait and see.
