In what has to be one of the strangest developments we've seen in some time, current Oscar nominee and recent Blood Father star Mel Gibson may be joining Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Daddy's Home 2, the sequel to the pair's surprise 2015 blockbuster comedy.
Here's the news, via the Hollywood Reporter:
Mel Gibson and John Lithgow are eyed to join Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Sean Anders' (Daddy's Home 2), which will once again see the two types of father figures — the strong alpha male and the sensitive caring type — go head-to-head. This time around, the palette is expanding to include an older generation.
For reasons we probably don't need to explain, Gibson's been largely absent from the Hollywood studio system over the past decade. It's probably fair to say that a co-starring role in Daddy's Home 2 would be his highest-profile on-screen gig since 2002's Signs. As of this morning, Paramount has dated Daddy's Home 2 for a November 10th release, which means that we'll probably know for sure if Gibson (and Lithgow!) have officially come onboard in the near future.
Gibson's been slowly working his way back from a truly disastrous decade, one which has seen him fall out of favor with quite a number of viewers. His recent Oscar nomination (Best Director, for Hacksaw Ridge) is just the latest sign that Hollywood's ready to give him another shot, but of course it remains to be seen if audiences are willing to take that leap, as well.
Where are you guys at on this thing? You ready to forgive Mel Gibson? Not so much? Did you even see the first Daddy's Home? Sound off in the comments below.
