According to Deadline, Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For The Wilderpeople, the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok) has officially signed on to direct Bubbles alongside co-director Mark Gustafson.
Bubbles, if you didn't already know, is a screenplay from Isaac Adamson. It topped the 2015 Black List and is hands down one of the weirdest, funniest, most unlikely projects currently kicking around Hollywood. Here's the logline:
A baby chimp is adopted by the pop star Michael Jackson. Narrating his own story, Bubbles the Chimp details his life within The King of Pop’s inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson’s life and eventually led to Bubbles’ release.
Yes, that's right: Bubbles is a biopic starring (and, more importantly, narrated by) Michael Jackson's famous pet chimpanzee. We've know for some time that Dan Harmon's Starburns Industries - the company that made Anomolisa - was onboard to give Adamson's script the stop-motion treatment, but until now no director's been attached to the project. Now we've got two directors, and they're both wildly talented (Gustafson worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox and is currently gearing up to co-direct Pinnochio with Guillermo del Toro).
Having read Adamson's script, I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is a movie you should start getting excited about right now. We're thrilled this one's actually coming together, particularly with these co-directors at the helm, and will be keeping our ear close to the ground for further updates.
