There’s Now A Development Deal Between Archie Comics And Warner Bros TV
Thanks to the success of The CW's Riverdale (which I believe we can reasonably attribute to ourselves, as the BMD community's been tooting that horn since July), Archie Comics has now signed a development deal with Warner Bros. Television in order to develop more original properties for the small screen.
So what does that mean, exactly? I think it's likely we can expect showrunner and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to develop a Sabrina the Teenage Witch spin-off (more on that here), as well as possibly a Josie and the Pussycats or Kevin Keller spin-off. But what else?
When asked if we can expect to see Li'l Jinx, Katy Keene or the Dark Circle characters on TV, Archie Comics publisher Jon Goldwater replied:
It’s part of the plan. Archie is unique in that we have a huge library of characters that are not only recognizable, but they’re successful and entertaining. Everyone knows Josie and Sabrina. Beyond that, we have an entire pantheon of heroes and villains that are perfect for TV or movies. Not to mention Katy Keene, Black Hood, Sam Hill, just to name a few. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to start talking about what we have coming up.
If you're like, "Who are these people, exactly?" then here's a brief sum-up:
* Li'l Jinx is a mischievous little girl who was born on Halloween and is always up to trouble.
* Katy Keene's a pin-up fashion plate, a super stylish model and actress.
* The Dark Circle characters are Archie Comics' superheroes, including Black Hood, Shield, Sam Hill and The Hangman.
Of those listed, I can't imagine much of a show cropping up around Li'l Jinx, Kevin Keller or Katy Keene, though I could be wrong about that. But the Dark Circle guys, Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina all feel like no-brainers.
So tell me, Archie nerds - who would you like to see spring from those colorful pages to your TV set? This is also a good place for some fan-casting. Michael_C suggested Kiernan Shipka for Sabrina in the comments last week, and now I'm afraid no one else will satisfy. Lay it on me!
