Here's something we didn't expect to be telling you today: Warner Bros. is courting Mel Gibson to direct the sequel to David Ayer's Suicide Squad.
No, seriously. Per The Hollywood Reporter:
Warner Bros. is courting (Mel Gibson) to helm Suicide Squad 2 and the sides are early in talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. No official offer has been made nor has any commitment.
Sources say that Gibson is familiarizing himself with the material.
The Hollywood Reporter goes on to say that Gibson isn't the only director WB's eyeing for the gig (Daniel Espinosa is also mentioned as being in contention), and explains that Ayer himself won't be returning because the director's tied up with that Gotham City Sirens project he's been working on with Margot Robbie. Gibson, meanwhile, is up for a Best Director Oscar at this year's Academy Awards, for his work on Hacksaw Ridge.
Word 'round the campfire is that this situation is in its earliest stages, so it's far from a done deal at this moment. But ... I mean, Jesus, can you imagine? The Birth.Movies.Death. crew is, quite frankly, stunned by the possibility. Please share your own thoughts and feelings on the matter in the space provided below.
And please, leave Jai out of this.
