According to a new report over at Deadline, Tom Waits and a number of talented actors who are not Tom Waits (Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, and Danny Glover among them) have joined the cast of David Lowery's The Old Man And The Gun.
Here's how Deadline's describing the film, which is based on a true story:
Forrest Tucker (Redford) has been on the wrong side of the law since he was a teen. He grew into a career bank robber who broke out of prison 18 times, including a daring escape from San Quentin at age 70. The film covers his twilight years, and an unprecedented string of daring heists that confound authorities and enchants the public. Wrapped up in this chase are a detective (Affleck) who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Spacek) who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.
Lowery, as you know, is coming off the one-two punch of Ain't Them Bodies Saints and Pete's Dragon, and apparently has another masterwork on his hands with Ghost Story, which arrives this July courtesy the good folks at A24. This material (which is apparently based on a 2003 New Yorker article of the same name by David Grann) sounds right up his alley, and would be exciting even without the inclusion of Tom Waits. That's just the cherry on top.
Fox Searchlight is currently closing a deal to distribute The Old Man And The Gun. The film begins shooting next month in Cincinnati, and you can bet your sweet candy ass we'll be keeping a close eye on it as it works its way through production.
In the meantime, please flood the comments below with your favorite Tom Waits songs. Here, I'll start the party:
