Casting JonBenet, the new documentary from Ukraine Is Not a Brothel's Kitty Green, will debut on Netflix on April 28, and today we've got a trailer:
I reviewed Casting JonBenet out of Sundance, and it's a film that's stayed with me since. It's incredibly challenging and richly layered, a documentary about this tragic story but about so much more: our pop culture approach to true crime, the way we filter our own trauma through that of strangers on the news, the very process of acting and performance. It's a powerful film and an uncomfortably entertaining one, and it needs to be on the top of your to-watch list come April.
Here's a synopsis, but hoo boy, believe me when I say it just barely covers the scope of Casting JonBenet:
The unsolved death of six-year-old American beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey remains the world's most sensational child murder case. Over 15 months, responses, reflections and performances were elicited from the Ramsey's Colorado hometown community, creating a bold work of art from the collective memories and mythologies the crime inspired.
Mark your calendars.
