Over the weekend, the Avatar Facebook page made it official: all four of James Cameron's Avatar sequels now have release dates.
Here's the news:
Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!
That's right: we're getting back-to-back Avatar sequels in 2020 and 2021, followed by a three-year lull, and then two more Avatar movies in 2024 and 2025. Not much is known about the plot(s) of Avatars 2-5, but word 'round the campfire is that many (perhaps even all) of them will contain lanky-ass blue cat people and large trees. Sam Worthington will also be involved to some degree.
We snark at the coming of Avatars 2-5, but we are perfectly aware how foolish it is to bet against James Cameron: time and again, Cameron has proven the naysayers wrong, delivering films that rake in hundreds of millions of dollars on their way to becoming legitimate pop culture events. Will Avatar 2, Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 continue that tradition? We'll start finding out in about three and a half years.
Until then: any of y'all revisited the first Avatar recently? Is that something we oughtta consider doing or not so much? Sound off in the comments below.
