Rejoice: JUDGE DREDD Is Coming To Television

Weirdest JUDGE JUDY spin-off ever.

Here's something we absolutely weren't expecting: Judge Dredd is coming to television, in a brand-new series called Judge Dredd: Mega City One.

The announcement was made by the good folks over at Entertainment Weekly, who had this to say:

"IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to turn the iconic comic book character into a TV show called Judge Dredd: Mega City One. The show is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. It will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them."

EW goes on to note that the series is currently in its earliest development stages, that no casting information is currently available, and that Mark Stern (Battlestar Galactica, Defiance) will be executive producing the show alongside Rebellion's Jason and Chris Kingsley.

Says Stern:

"This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age. Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television.”

Agreed 100% on the above: Judge Dredd is only getting more relevant, it is steeped in trenchant social commentary, and it is, in fact, "fun as hell". Speaking as a fan of both the source material and 2012's Dredd (one of the most underrated would-be blockbusters of the past decade), I'm excited to have a Dredd series on the way.

Nothing further to report at this time, but we'll keep you informed as updates roll in. While you're waiting, smoke some Slo-Mo in the comments below.
