New WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Teaser Includes A Most Unexpected Cameo

This is awesome.

The 20th Century Fox Twitter feed just dropped a brand-new teaser for War For The Planet Of The Apes, and it does something pretty special.

Take a look at this and see what you think.

That voice is unmistakable: that's Charlton Heston, star of the original Planet Of The Apes. The realization caused me some momentary confusion: if Heston's been dead since 2008, and if that audio's not from the original Planet Of The Apes...what are we listening to, exactly?

Well, the good news is that I work with a crack team of Planet Of The Apes obsessives, and it took them (specifically, Phil Nobile Jr. and Andrew Todd) all of about three minutes to discern that the voiceover in this teaser is audio from a speech Heston gave at the opening of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. What's more, he's reading a passage from his own autobiography, In The Arena

How cool is that? I have an answer: it's so cool, I don't even care that I've been tricked into watching yet another teaser-for-a-trailer thing. We're damn impressed by the above, and think it bodes very well, indeed, for tomorrow's full trailer reveal.

In case you haven't been keeping up, here's War For The Planet Of The Apes' official plot synopsis:

"Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet."

War For The Planet Of The Apes arrives on July 14th. A new trailer arrives tomorrow. Stay tuned for both.
