GODZILLA VS KONG To Be Directed By Adam Wingard

Did not see that one coming.

It’s been fashionable lately to graduate indie filmmakers to the blockbuster level, often after only one feature under their belt. Adam Wingard has more than one feature under his belt. And yet this still surprises me.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Guest and Blair Witch director has just signed on to direct Godzilla Vs. Kong. It’s being written by a writers room that includes folks like Terry Rossio, JD Payne, and J. Michael Straczynski among like fifty-five other people.

I honestly don’t know what to think about this, nor do I have any idea what kind of kaiju expertise Wingard will bring to the table. Some of his movies are quite good, but his Blair Witch was seriously awful, and nothing in his filmography thus far indicates how he will deal with big action. And, you know, watching King Kong fight Godzilla is kind of a big deal. I want the right person doing it. Getting Gareth Edwards for Godzilla is a no-brainer, and I can see the logic of Michael Dougherty for Godzilla: King of Monsters. With Wingard, I just don’t know.

But I might as well hope for the best because we’re stuck with him. We have some time, as the film isn’t planned to come out until 2020.
