Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell's Daddy's Home was something of a surprise hit back in 2015, earning $242M worldwide on the back of a $70M budget. Sure, the movie bombed with critics (it's currently sitting at a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes), but when your movie turns that kind of profit, a sequel was all but guaranteed.
Which brings us to the first trailer for Daddy's Home 2.
This is a moderately funny trailer for what'll probably end up being a moderately funny comedy, but one suspects the conversation surrounding this trailer - and, indeed, the film itself - will have less to do with how funny the movie is or how good Wahlberg and Ferrell's chemistry is or how bright John Lithgow's sweaters are...and everything to do with the fact that the film also stars Mel Gibson, appearing here as Wahlberg's ne'er-do-well father, Kurt. Kind of unavoidable!
One further suspects that this sequel's box office performance will be watched very closely by Hollywood: should Daddy's Home 2 bomb miserably, the takeaway will probably be "People don't want to see Mel Gibson onscreen." Should it prove successful, we can probably expect to see more of Gibson. People are going to vote with their dollars, in other words, and it'll be very interesting to see how that vote shakes out.
Where do you folks stand on all this? Willing to give Daddy's Home 2 (and, by extension, Mel Gibson) another shot? Are you entirely unwilling to see it? We're curious where your heads are at, so hit the comments below to weigh in.
Daddy's Home 2 arrives on November 10th.
