JUMANJI Trailer Says A Hearty Goodbye To The Original Film

The original Jumanji (which I still enjoy quite a bit) was about a board game in which every dice roll comes with the danger of real life consequences, and the only way to fix all the damage caused is to finish the game.

This new Jumanji might have a similar game structure, but you’d never know that from watching the trailer, which you can do below:

So that’s pretty different. The Rock, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black play avatars for high school twerps who get sucked into a Jumanji video game. Once in the game they… I don’t know, get chased by rhinos a lot and make in-jokes about their new appearances. Rather than have pieces of the jungle invade everyday America, they’re actually in the jungle itself, so I imagine the film will have a different method for building chaos and tension before the game ends.

I’m a little bummed out about this, but thankfully I have some time to get over it before the film comes out this Christmas. With that cast, there’s plenty of opportunity for a fun adventure movie here. I also kind of hope they all make out.
