SMALLVILLE’s Erica Durance Joins SUPERGIRL Season 3

She'll replace an outgoing castmember.

GREAT news: Smallville's secret weapon, the inimitable Erica Durance (television and film's best Lois Lane, do not @ me) is joining Supergirl's third season. She's replacing Laura Benanti as Kara's late but flashback-friendly birth mother Alura, after Benanti's Broadway schedule interfered with filming.

Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in New York,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says. “But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.

Hatcher played Durance's mother on Smallville, in the neverending stunt casting cycle of DC television shows, a tradition Supergirl has proudly maintained with alums like Dean Cain, Helen Slater, Lynda Carter and Durance's Smallville compatriot Laura Vandervoort. But Durance has much more to offer than meta cred: she's a tremendous actress, demonstrating strength, nuance, grace and great comic timing in her seven seasons on SmallvilleSupergirl's lucky to have her.

Here's my regular plea for you newbie DCTV fans to give Smallville a shot! The whole series is currently streaming on Hulu, or you can pick up all ten seasons on DVD (with truly awesome extras) at the below link. And hey, if 217 episodes sounds a little daunting, check out my primer
