Randall Park Joins ANT-MAN AND THE WASP As S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent

The history of Jimmy Woo runs deep.

Marvel will probably make a few key announcements about Ant-Man and The Wasp at this month’s Comic Con, but before we find out who’s playing The Wasp – original Wasp Janet Van Dyne, that is – we’re already starting to see the rest of the cast take shape. The next actor to join the ranks of the Peyton Reed-helmed sequel? Fresh off the Boat and The Interview star Randall Park!

Park is one of the funniest actors in Hollywood and he sounds like a perfect fit for this corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’ll be playing Chinese-American Secret Agent Jimmy Woo, who debuted way before Marvel even existed. He first showed up as the hero of Atlas Comics’ Yellow Claw (the title refers to the series’ villain) back in 1956 before being folded into the Marvel universe as part of a S.H.I.E.L.D. story in ’67.

He’s best known as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, though most of his fun stories take place in Agents of Atlas, a group comprising pre-Marvel Marvel characters like Namora, Marvel Boy and Gorilla-Man, a gorilla man whose real name is Kenneth. Most of his fun stories outside the time he was sent to hunt Godzilla, I mean. That won’t happen in Ant-Man and The Wasp sadly, though one has to wonder in what capacity he’ll be involved since S.H.I.E.L.D. no longer exists in this universe. Yes, yes, I know, they exist on TV show, but as far as the movies go, the organization went kaput in 2014. We did see hints of the cleanup crew Damage Control in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so that’s another possibility. They’ll certainly have their hands full after the first Infinity War.

I’ve got my fingers crossed he’ll show up as the head of the comics’ Pan-Asian School for the Unusually Gifted, a Mumbai-based Xavier’s Mansion for young superhumans, but that’s probably wishful thinking.

Ant-Man and the Wasp crawls/flies into theatres July 6th 2018.
