SDCC 2017: Exclusive BLACK PANTHER Footage Earned A Standing Ovation
We saw an extended, exclusive clip of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther in the Marvel panel in Hall H today, and learned that the film takes place very soon after the events of Civil War, with T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) still mourning the death of his father and trying to figure out how to rule. Meanwhile, Michael B. Jordan told us that his Erik Killmonger "has his own ideas about Wakanda and how it should be run, and he has his eyes on the throne."
The footage we saw was incredible. It opens with T’Challa, Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) entering a posh casino in their most glamorous finery. They’re there to intercept a Vibranium delivery between Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue and Martin Freeman's Everett K. Ross. Events go awry and it results in a thrilling fight in the club, with Klaue's klaw splitting open and turning into a laser cannon pointed right at T'Challa.
The fight devolves further into a breathless car chase scene on the streets outside in which much havoc is wreaked. And then the scene transitioned into a trailer that fans are likely to see online later, giving us our most thorough look yet at the gorgeous Wakanda, a golden version of the Black Panther suit and tons more action.
The footage was riveting, and it was no surprise when all of Hall H erupted into cheers and gave a standing ovation afterward. The cast hadn't seen this footage yet, and their reaction onstage was the best part - they were jumping up and hugging each other, thrilled. It brought tears to my eyes.
We also saw the new Black Panther poster in the panel, and you can check that out below:
