According to Deadline...
"Amazon Studios has acquired Lucy and Desi, the Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama from Escape Artists that has Cate Blanchett attached to star as TV’s pioneering star Lucille Ball. The project has been percolating a couple years...there is already movement toward finding a big star to play Ball’s former husband Desi Arnaz, with names like Javier Bardem in the mix..."
So, lots to unpack here. Let's start with the reveal that Cate Blanchett will play comedy icon Lucille Ball - that's about as perfect casting marriage as we've ever seen. Not entirely sold on the idea of Javier Bardem playing Desi Arnaz, perhaps, but at this point it would probably be foolish to underestimate Bardem in any role (and besides, I don't have a better suggestion).
Secondly: this is quite a coup for Amazon Studios, who are really giving Netflix a run for their money in terms of attracting top-shelf filmmaking talent. Both companies have found critical success in their various filmmaking ventures (Netflix had Beasts Of No Nation, Okja, and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman feels like a safe bet, critically-speaking; Amazon Studios has delivered The Big Sick and last year's Oscar-winning Manchester By The Sea), but the competition's only getting more fierce. This is just the latest volley in that war, and it's a helluva get.
And, finally: Aaron Sorkin scripting a Lucy and Desi biopic is as exciting as it is a potential mine field. One suspects the think pieces and hot takes will flow, starting...oh, any minute now, and up through the film's release. We look forward to reserving judgment until we've seen it for ourselves.
But for the time being? We're pretty excited about the possibilities here. How about you folks? Sound off in the comments below.
