We've known for some time that Cary Fukunaga's next project would be Maniac, a Netflix series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Today we learn the 10-episode series is getting another strong performer, as well as a few more details about the show itself.
Take it away, IndieWire:
“Maniac is a 10-episode drama based on the 2014 Norwegian series. Hill and Stone’s characters are patients in a mental asylum and a majority of the season will take place in their dreamed-up fantasy worlds. Think of it as Fukunaga’s version of Sucker Punch. Theroux is playing a character named James Mantleray, who is rumored to be an alcoholic mad scientist. No character description has been confirmed."
First of all, three cheers for this cast: Theroux, Hill and Stone are all powerhouse performers, and it's exciting to imagine what kind of work they'll turn out while working under Fukunaga. Secondly, how 'bout that description? This thing sounds like it could be fully hallucinogenic. We're still not clear on who's actually shooting the thing (Fukunaga often serves as his own cinematographer, but IMDb still doesn't have a credit for that department yet), but we're guessing this one's gonna look amazing.
Production on Maniac is currently underway in New York City. No word on when it might hit Netflix, but you can rest assured we've got our ear to the ground for updates. Stay tuned.
