Jerry Seinfeld is not an emotional guy. To the point of almost seeming rude, he’s just not the kind of person to get hung up on the basic human need to connect with others. Unless they’re comedians.
Which makes the trailer for, and apparent premise of Jerry Before Seinfeld, his upcoming Netflix special, somewhat surprising. Check it out:
That’s a lot of home video footage and backward looking from a guy like Seinfeld. Even the stand-up comedy bits we see here seem overly centered on his childhood. The idea that Seinfeld lives the life of a grown up kid has always been part of his persona, but I didn’t expect him to ever dive into this stuff so explicitly.
It’s all very interesting and transforms Jerry Before Seinfeld into something more than just a comedy special. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Jerry Before Seinfeld hits Netflix September 19. I can’t wait.
