I, TONYA Will Be Distributed By NEON And 30WEST

The buzz-worthy film of TIFF lands a theatrical deal.

Disclosure: BMD Owner Tim League co-owns NEON.

I, Tonya is emerging from TIFF with great word-of-mouth this week, which makes us extra excited to report that the film has been picked up for distribution by NEON and 30West.

The film, described in early reactions as both darkly funny and surprisingly empathetic, is the tale of disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, who was banned from the sport in 1994 after her boyfriend Jeff Gillooly and several co-conspirators enacted a plan to maim rival skater Nancy Kerrigan. Harding later pled guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution of the attackers.

Margot Robbie, who recently confessed to not initially knowing the film was a true story, stars as Harding and is a producer on the film. Sebastian Stan plays her boyfriend Jeff Gillooly, and Allison Janney plays Harding’s mom LaVona Golden.

I, Tonya is currently enjoying effusive reviews out of TIFF, with the LA Times saying the film “finds unforeseen nuance in a story that many might assume they already know too well.”

Listen to the film’s stars and director Craig Gillespie discuss the making of the film (and meeting Harding) below.
