Wong Kar-wai To Direct Crime Series For Amazon
It’s been almost four years since master filmmaker Wong Kar-wai delivered his last feature (2013’s stunningly beautiful martial arts epic The Grandmaster), and the Hong Kong filmmaker has been circling several projects (including a Gucci biopic for Annapurna) since.
Now, it looks like Wong Kar-wai has settled on his next endeavor – the crime series Tong Wars (which sounds more like a Johnnie To picture, but whatever) for Amazon. Written and Executive Produced by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco), the hour-long drama is set around clashes between Chinese immigrants and the mafia in San Francisco Chinatown.
It’s unclear as to whether Wong Kar-wai is going to be directing the entire series, but any output from him is a treat to be welcomed. His hiring also continues to solidify Amazon as an autuer’s haven, as he’s joining a roster of creatives that are using the retail production giant as a port to foster their grander impulses. We can’t wait to see what Tong Wars turns out to be.
