Festival Season is officially upon us, and the Austin Film Fest is looking to grab a few headlines with its Opening Night and Centerpiece Films, along with a tribute to old school genre titan Walter Hill (The Warriors, Streets of Fire).
Opening the fest will be Greta Gerwig’s coming of age solo directorial debut, Lady Bird, which has been getting rave reviews out of TIFF (including one from BMD’s own Jason Gorber). The Centerpiece selection will be The Current War, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s historical drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Katherine Waterson and Michael Shannon.
On top of those new and exciting picks, AFF will honor Walter Hill and Keenan Ivory Wayans with their Extraordinary Contribution to Film and Television Awards. To celebrate Mr. Hill, AFF will be hosting a conversation moderated by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) which is sure to be one hell of a time for action movie fans.
I don’t know about you, but seeing Walter Hill and Shane Black discuss some of our favorite genre movies and the craft that contributes to their success sounds like one hell of a thrill. Hopefully, BMD will have some coverage for you from the chat.
