A few nights ago, John Cena had a bit of an unspoken, post-match farewell at a WWE Pay Per View as he headed off to Hollywood to become the next Marky Mark. The Transformers series will likely inherit the serious, militaristic Cena of The Marine, but where his real on-screen talent lies outside of selling injuries happens to be in the realm of comedy. It's a good thing he's teaming up with Kumail Nanjiani of The Big Sick for a buddy cop movie, then.
Deadline reports Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer will direct the yet untitled project, likely once he's done with that Venom spin-off. Cena and Kumail are the kind of on-screen dream team I didn't know I wanted until I actually heard the news. It's one of those bonkers combinations that simply never occurred to me. I have no idea who's going to play what kind of role in the film, but my guess is it probably won't be your traditional by-the-book veteran/rogue rookie dynamic unless Fleischer puts an interesting spin on it.
Regardless, Universal Studios has a potential comedy hit on its hands given the people involved. Everyone wants more Kumail and people are going to want more Cena once he crosses over into movies more, and I for one can't wait. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.
