Venom is shaping up to be a strange one, with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) directing, and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinker (The Dark Tower) scripting the comic book adaptation. Details on the plot have been kept under wraps, but as our own Siddhant tells it, the movie's more than likely set to be a showdown between the Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy) and serial killer Cletus Cassidy (a/k/a the red suited psychotic mirror to our alien symbiote “hero”, Carnage).
Riz Ahmed is now confirmed to be joining the picture, though his exact role (again: probably Carnage) is still a mystery. Now, Michelle Williams is circling a role in Venom, which is being described in the trades as “a district attorney, and potentially Hardy’s love interest”. This role feels weird for Williams, as she’s already getting Oscar Buzz for Ridley Scott’s All The Money In the World, is supposedly great in Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck, and hasn’t been in a big studio picture since Oz: The Great and the Powerful (which is, admittedly, fun).
Here’s the thing: Fleischer is not an exciting director in the least bit (I mean, have you seen fucking Gangster Squad), but still has a knack for attracting big names to his genre projects. The script could be awesome (though those two writers’ names certainly call that into question), or Sony is dangling gigantic cartoon bags of money in front of these performers' faces. You know what? I’m going with that last one until I hear otherwise.
Venom is set to hit theaters October 5, 2018. It still sounds like a bad idea, but all these names are ensuring I’m gonna watch the shit out of it.
