Paramount is looking to get into the big budget martial arts serial game by hiring Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) to pen the script for their upcoming Lone Wolf & Cub adaptation.
Produced by Fast & The Furious kingpin Justin Lin (whose work on True Detective Season 2 is quite underrated), the new movie will bring Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's 70s manga series (which ran close to 9,000 pages by the time it was completed) to American screens. Koike and Kojima's work was acclaimed for its storytelling and historical accuracy, as it detailed the journey of a shogun's executioner named Itto Ogami and his infant son, Daigoro, who set off on a quest for revenge after the rest of their family is murdered.
Lone Wolf & Cub also produced a series of hyper-violent, splattery films during the 70s, which became landmarks in genre and exploitation cinema (and were recently released in a box set from the Criterion Collection). So, if you need catching up, now's the time to do so.
Paramount has been trying to get Lone Wolf & Cub set up for almost fifteen years now, as Darren Aronofsky was at one point set to helm this new iteraton. No word on who will be directing Walker's script, but this is all sorts of exciting. Now, who should helm this bad boy, and who the hell would you pick to play Itto Ogami?
