Remember Captain Marvel? We haven’t heard much about it lately, so let’s get all caught up. It comes out March 2019 and will be directed by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck from a screenplay by Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve. Brie Larson will play the title character, Samuel L. Jackson will be in it, and - craziest of all - it will be a period piece set in the ‘90s.
Okay, so we’re up to date. One of the things the film doesn’t have yet is its underwhelming Marvel villain. According to Deadline, that may no longer be the case. They are reporting that Ben Mendelsohn is now in talks to bring his trademark evil to the film. They don’t yet know which villain Mendelsohn will play, but when you got Mendelsohn, does it really matter?
While a small part of me started feeling a little burned out on Marvel recently, I am still very excited about Captain Marvel and the refreshing potential its time-setting offers. And I do usually enjoy Mendesohn. But this isn’t exactly exciting casting. This guy is a villain in everything. Hopefully (if he does in fact get the part), he’ll play someone a little more interesting than just “Ben Mendelsohn in sci-fi clothing”.
