Christian Bale is a great actor, but we wish he'd have fun just a little more often. Granted, a post-Civil War Western where he plays a racist army Captain who has to escort a dying Native American Chief (Wes Studi) back to his reservation probably isn't the place for him to be flashing the pearly whites, but he just seems so one note in this first trailer for Hostiles. Tell a joke, my man. You'll feel better.
Take a look:
There's been some low-rumbling Academy Award buzz building since Hostiles played Telluride, and it certainly looks handsome (not to mention sports supporting turns from Ben Foster, Rosamund Pike, and Jesse Plemons). However, it's directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass, Out of the Furnace), who is arguably one of the most boring directors working right now. So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this one plays out on December 22.
