Welcome to my favorite Saturday Night Live episode yet this year, by a country mile. For those of you unfamiliar with Tiffany Haddish, how was your time in that underground bunker? Seriously, Tiffany Haddish is breaking out big time this year. With the success of Girls' Trip, Haddish is riding a wave of funny and that wave crashed onto the shores of SNL in a huge way this week.
I am happy to report picking one sketch to highlight was difficult. In the end, I literally “eenie meanie”-ed the decision between “The Dolphin Who Learned To Speak” and “Tournament Fighter.” Claire from HR during Weekend Update also deserves a big shoutout. (And someone get her a meal that isn’t from CVS, please. She’s spread THIN!) The Eenie Meenie gods ultimately chose “Tournament Fighter”, and I’d like to welcome you all to the world of Boo Boo Jeffries.
This sketch takes place in a gaming tournament. It’s the semi’s for "Death Fight 12" and it’s down to Sonic Goon (Pete Davidson) and Pwn Donkey (Kenan Thompson). (Sidebar: nice handles, btw.) Time to face off and pick your fighters, fellas! Sonic goes with Scorponox. Pwn Donkey starts reviewing his choices and, oops! Wrong buttons his way into picking Boo Boo Jeffries. Surely she’s in this game for a reason, right? I mean, surely? Not so much…
I, personally, would totally play a video game where Boo Boo Jeffries battles the David S. Pumpkins skeletons. And, by battle, I mean you can just hit buttons to make them dance. Additionally, Tiffany came out strong from the get-go, with a great monologue. That’s to be expected from such a great standup, but she pulled off the ultimate callback during Weekend Update. You have to watch it to get it, but suffice it to say, Tiffany is MVP of SNL this year.
