The first trailer for Christian Rivers' Mortal Engines just found its way online, and hoo boy, is this thing eye-popping. If you've ever wished to see the entirety of London loaded onto big-ass wheels and embroiled in a high-speed chase with a much smaller, also-on-wheels city, well, this is the movie for you.
Take a look.
This writer's not read the Phillip Reeves novels on which Mortal Engines is based, but this imagery is undeniably cool (I am, in fact, having strong flashbacks to Clive Barker's short story "In The Hills, The Cities"), and I'm curious to learn more about this weirdo world.
Here's the official plot synopsis:
"Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future."
Yeah, all of this sounds like it'll be fun. We've got a long ways to go before Mortal Engines hits theaters - it won't arrive until December 14th of 2018 - but we're all very curious about this one, and will be keeping our ear to the ground for updates as they roll in.
While we're waiting on the next one: any of you folks read this series? Think we should give the books a whirl before seeing the movie? Sound off in the comments below, but try not to go buckwild with the spoiler talk.
