So, uh, here's a thing. According to Vanity Fair...
"According to the Daily Mail, comedian and prankster Sacha Baron Cohen paid Simpson $20,000 to appear in an upcoming, to-be-announced film. A source said that Cohen wore a curly wig and thick glasses while meeting with Simpson in a Las Vegas hotel room...
“O.J. would not even get in the hotel room until he was paid a sackload of cash,” the source told the Daily Mail. “There was no way Sacha could have got O.J. into the room without paying money.”
For one thing, the key phrase in the above is "According to the Daily Mail", a combination of words that should give any critically-thinking human being pause (the Daily Mail is not what you might consider the most reliable news source).
On the other hand, roping OJ Simpson into an embarrassing exchange sounds like exactly the sort of hijinks one might find Sacha Baron Cohen getting up to - there's a tasteless element to the whole thing that feels within the Cohen wheelhouse, there's the D-list celebrity angle, you've got strong odds for something totally humiliating happening. We don't know if we're totally buying this, but it wouldn't be completely outside the realm of possibility.
And finally, here's an interesting exchange from the end of Vanity Fair's post:
"The Daily Mail found Simpson at a wine bar in Las Vegas to ask him about his alleged relationship with Baron Cohen, but he kept his response brief.
“I know him well. I met him,” Simpson said. “Nice guy.”
Earlier in the report we learned that Cohen met Simpson while wearing "a curly wig and thick glasses", which seems to be an indication that he was meeting with Simpson in-character. That'd be par for the course with Cohen stunts. Less par-for-the-course: Simpson actually meeting the "real" Cohen, or describing his meeting with an in-character Cohen as "nice". We suppose it's possible that Cohen was simply wearing a disguise to meet with Simpson, but that doesn't sound like the comedian's usual M.O.
Anyway, we don't quite know what to make of this just yet, but we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for further updates as they roll in. Stay tuned for that, and hit the comments below with your thoughts on the above while you're waiting to learn more.
