Remember when Thomas Haden Church played the Sandman in Spider-Man 3? It feels like half my lifetime ago since I was sitting in a theater trying to make sense of that over-stuffed mess (that I still enjoy a good deal, for the most part). In the decade since, Church has steered clear from superhero stuff, with the exception of Killer Joe and Heaven Is For Real*.
But it sounds like Lowell from Wings is tossing his striped t-shirt back into the ring. In an interview with JoBlo (for his HBO series, Divorce), Church teases a role that he's already filmed for an upcoming superhero project:
“I’m not supposed to talk about it, but I actually have returned, but not in the Marvel world, it’s another world, but it is in that genre of superheroes and supervillains. I’m not supposed to talk about it, it’s a movie I shot last year. They’re trying to keep it - and good luck to ‘em - with, y’know, today man, I’m surprised it hasn’t already kinda been revealed.”
So - it's in the genre of superheroes/supervillains, shot last year, but isn't related to the MCU? Technically, it could be Venom - though that seems highly unlikely, as Woody Harrelson was also just recently rumored to be playing Carnage in that spin-off (two mystery characters in one picture becoming a dubious proposition). In the DCEU, Shazam! just began filming (so that's ruled out), which leaves James Wan's Aquaman (which did wrap filming last year).
Maybe it's someone in Deadpool 2, which completed shooting in the Fall of 2017? Or maybe it's a character we haven't considered appearing in The New Mutants horror film? Or maybe Steven Spielberg had him play a superhero character in Ready Player One? Or maybe it's some new shit we're not even up on yet?
There are just too many options to choose from.
*Not to mention the underrated John Carter.
