The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a tiny, thoughtful, formally beautiful movie A24 released last year that unfortunately not may folks saw (thus missing a rather amazing turn from Bill Pullman). But it also showed that the current indie titan is willing to invest in all sorts of genres, bringing these quaint little pictures to screens in theaters, on VOD, or through their partnership with DirecTV.
Now, A24 is following Lefty Brown with the Jessica Chastain/Sam Rockwell Old West tale Woman Walks Ahead. Chastain stars as a widow who heads out from New York, determined to paint a portrait using Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes) as her next subject. Of course, she's met with some hostility (including Sam Rockwell's racist Army officer) and constantly warned that the frontier is no place for a woman.
A24 just released a trailer for the picture, and it looks rather lovely. Take a look:
Penned by Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises) and directed by Susanna White (Generation Kill), this looks like another stealth winner from the studio we've come to trust at just about every turn. Here's hoping it lives up to their already high standards.
Woman Walks Ahead is set to come out exclusively on DirecTV May 31st, and in select theaters June 29th.
