Alright, I need everyone to be serious for a moment.
I know the phrase "John Travolta is starring in a John Gotti biopic directed by the guy who played E on Entourage" does not inspire overwhelming confidence, but today we've got a new trailer for said film, and I'm determined not to immediately laugh it off. Let's give this thing a chance. Let's take an honest, open look at the footage below and see if maybe - just maybe! - it's better than its description would imply.
Here we go.
Okay, I'm still not convinced a John Gotti biopic starring John Travolta and directed by Kevin Connolly (E from Entourage) is the best idea ever, but this does look more confidently assembled than I would've expected. Not great, to be sure, but it certainly doesn't look like the camp trainwreck some of those unfortunate set photos seemed to promise. No, this looks more like a middle-of-the-road type deal. And, hey, if nothing else, Travolta really does seem to be putting in the effort.
This entire enterprise is gonna hinge on his performance, by the way. Everything else about it - the cast, the costumes, the cinematography - seems reasonably competent, but if Travolta doesn't nail this gig, there's no hope of it hanging together.
Here's an offical plot synopsis, in case any of the above was unclear:
"John Gotti rises to the top of the New York underworld to become the boss of the Gambino crime family. His life takes a tumultuous turn as he faces tragedy, multiple trials and a prison sentence."
John Gotti is a monstrous, fascinating figure, and his life is certainly worth the biopic treatment. Is this the Gotti movie true crime fans and mafia enthusiasts (surely such a thing exists, right?) have been waiting for? We'll find out when Gotti, directed by E from Entourage, opens on June 15th.
What do you folks think of the above? Feeling it or nah?
