Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - the first entry into the Friday the 13th series at New Line Cinema following its legendary Paramount Pictures run - turns 25 this August. This means the movie's now been hated on by fans (somewhat unfairly) for 2.5 decades, and is due to be revisited and (possibly) re-evaluated.
Don't get this writer wrong, Jason Goes to Hell definitely ranks near (or at) the bottom of the body count barrel, as it barely features Jason Voorhees (who's a body-hopping demon instead of his ususal lumbering, murderous self), and showcases a bunch of really bizarre back-story involving daggers, and being "born of a Voorhees woman", and climaxes with this little wriggling demon flying up a corpse's vagina. None of it makes a whole lot of sense, and the last image teased a movie that we'd have to wait ten more years for and (ultimately) be disappointed by.
But there were bright spots! The diner massacre in the movie's second act is one hell of an insane, gory set piece (that's even better in the unrated cut). Another highlight: Creighton Duke - the totally bonkers bounty hunter who's tracked down like eight trillion serial killers and counts Jason as his "white whale" or some shit. Steven Williams is a total maniac in the role, breaking fingers in jail cells and generally becoming more ghoulish than the mass murderer he's hunting.
Well, Adam Marcus - director of Jason Goes To Hell and pretty much nothing else the rest of us have ever seen (though he co-wrote Texas Chainsaw 3D [shudder]) - is saying that he has some secret Creighton Duke spin-off movie up his sleeve. Speaking with the Cinema Toast Crunchcast, Marcus said:
"I have a movie…you’re the first ones I’ve talked about this to…that is a completely Creighton Duke-inspired movie. We’re doing that next year. I can tell you that I’m talking with Steven Williams about this. I’m dead serious about this movie. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years. For me, that was the character that I gave a crap about. That’s the guy that I adore. And, I’m tellin’ ya, I have something up my sleeve that’s gonna knock people out."
I mean, sure, Adam, I'd watch that movie, especially if Williams is coming out to go full-tilt insane again. That said, there are a few issues here, the first being that Duke got the life literally squeezed out of him in Jason Goes To Hell (spoilers, I guess).
The second is obviously the ongoing lawsuit regarding the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise, which Duke's character and likeness would almost certainly fall under. Any new franchise entries have been put on hold, and even the super popular video game recently had to stop generating content while it all gets sorted out. In short, if Marcus really does want to make this Creighton Duke movie, it probably won't feature Jason, and will be called Deighton Cruke or something.
Anyway, this sounds neat, but is probably never going to happen, regardless of how many conversations Marcus has with Williams, or how much he loves the character. The picture could be cool as hell, but legal woes are just the worst, you know?
To be continued (but don't hold your breath).
