Circus Of Pain: UNDER THE SKIN’s Jonathan Glazer Is Making An Auschwitz Drama

Just in case you thought his previous output wasn't existentially unsettling enough.

Under the Skin is one of the absolute best pieces of cinema to come out of the last twenty or so years, a spiritual nightmare that stuck with this writer well after he walked out of the theater. Skin also served as a reminder that its visual author - former music video auteur-cum-big screen nightmare factory Jonathan Glazer - has directed far too few features between Sexy BeastBirth and Skin

Now, Glazer has confirmed that his next project will be a Holocaust drama revolving around the German concentration camp in Auschwitz. However, those expecting a grim trip into the gas chambers might need to adjust their expectations, as Glazer isn't going to be making that type of Holocaust picture. Speaking to the A Dash of Drash podcast, the writer/director said:

"I remember being very taken by the faces of the bystanders, the onlookers, the complicit, you know? Ordinary Germans. I started wondering how it would be possible to stand by and watch that. Some of the faces actually enjoy it. The spectacle of it. The kinda circus of it."

Whoa. That last part sounds downright heinous to witness (and will probably make for some heavy viewing). Glazer continued on, stating how he'd like to explore the Nazis' infamous extermination arena, saying:

 “A lot of the stories I’ve seen, I do sometimes think they could be set anywhere actually. As soon as you define a plot, you’re sort of somehow relegating Auschwitz as a place and it becomes a context. For me, I don’t want to do that. I just felt that was wrong.”

The ethics of crafting this sort of story are very important to Glazer - a Jewish man whose religion guided a great deal of his schooling - and helps explain the wait between 2013's Skin and this yet to be titled passion project:

"Now, I’ve spent four or five years working entirely on this...”

Glazer is one of the great filmmakers of our time, so his return to the camera should be greeted with enthusiasm by cinephiles. The fact that he's bringing us a work that's so near and dear to his heritage should only intrigue us more, as this sounds like one of those movies the artist's been building up to his whole life.

No release date is set as of yet (as it's still a ways off from shooting), but Glazer's eyeing the 2020 calendar. We'll keep you posted.
