Frances Conroy Might Be Playing The JOKER’s Mom

Please, no Martha jokes.

Hot on the heels of the news that Robert De Niro has entered negotiations to appear in Todd Phillips' Joker origin movie comes this piece of gossip, via The Wrap:

"Frances Conroy is in talks to play the Joker’s mother, Penny, in Warner Bros.’ Joker, an individual with knowledge of the project exclusively told TheWrap."

Huh. This is another solid get for the Joker origin movie.

Word on the street is, Joker will revolve around an unstable man by the name of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), who finds himself back in Gotham City and tending to his ailing mother as outside forces conspire to turn him into the Clown Prince of Crime. Assuming all that's true, Conroy would be playing Penny Fleck (fun trivia: this same role was recently turned down by Frances McDormand). How Robert De Niro's talk show host factors into all this remains to be seen, but...this is all kind of interesting, right?

Folks, I think we need to have a serious conversation about what we're gonna do if Joker turns out to be Good, Actually™. As Jacob noted in his post from earlier today, we dragged the hell outta this project when it was first announced (and to be fair, we're still not clear why anyone needs a Joker origin movie), but it's getting increasingly difficult to deny that Phillips may be onto something special here. Might be a good kinda special, might be a very bad kinda special. Either way, we're intrigued.

Stay tuned for more on Joker as it becomes available. It'll hit theaters on October 4th, 2019, so there's sure to be plenty of updates between now and then. In the interim, please hit the comments section below to wrestle with the question posed in the paragraph above.
