NOTE: Every Star Trek-loving member of the Birth.Movies.Death. team is off running errands today, which means the task of writing up the following news has fallen on the shoulders of Scott Wampler, who has never watched a single Star Trek series and has little (if, indeed, any) grasp on Star Trek mythology.
Exciting news via Deadline!
Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory Peck, has just signed on to star as Spock in the second season of CBS All Access' Star Trek Discovery, I show I did not even realize could have a Spock if it wanted one. Apparently this one can, and it will, and he will be played by Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory Peck.
Um (nervously sweating).
As you know, Star Trek is a show about space and friendship and has had many, many iterations over the years, including (frantically clicks over to Wikipedia) Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nines. It (checks another Wikipedia page) definitely doesn't have anything to do with William Shatner's TekWar, even though plenty of people mistakenly believe that! But not me!
Here is a space-filling pull-quote which provides further information about how Spark will factor into Star Trek: Discovery's plotline:
"Picking up on the half Vulcan and half human role portrayed by the late Leonard Nimoy in the original series and Zachary Quinto in the most recent big screen reboot, Ethan Peck will play Spock in Season 2 of Star Trek Discovery. In the Discovery narrative, which takes place about a decade before the adventures of the original Trek TV series, U.S.S. Enterprise Science Officer Spock is the foster brother of lead Sonequa Martin-Green’s 'Michael Burnham' character."
It probably goes without saying how all this will play out, so I won't waste your time explaining it here. But rest assured, everyone at Birth.Movies.Death. who watches Star Trek: Discovery has an opinion on this news, and at some point we might even hear what these informed opinions are.
UPDATE: Former Birth.Movies.Death. Editor-in-Chief Meredith Borders has provided some valuable intel about the casting of Ethan Peck, grandson of Gregory Peck, on CBS All Access' Star Trek Discovery.
already blowing it on the Total Cutie beat by not mentioning that Ethan Peck played the Heath Ledger role in the TV version of 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, you guys are falling apart without me— Meredith Borders (@xymarla) August 14, 2018
Star Trek: Discovery returns to (checks notes) CBS All Access in January of 2019.
