Glorious! Warner Bros. Starts Development On The CRAZY RICH ASIANS Sequel
This post contains mild spoilers for Crazy Rich Asians.
So Crazy Rich Asians turned out to be pretty awesome, right? Well, a big turnout of $35 million dollars over the course of the film's five day opening weekend seems to confirm that most people agree on that sentiment, so it was probably only a matter of time before we caught wind of a sequel. And like clockwork, one week after the film's release, The Hollywood Reporter let loose the news that Warner Brothers has officially moved forward on development of the second book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend.
Director Jon. M Chu is attached to return, as are producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti, and writers Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. No word yet on returning cast - and it's important to note that entering development does not mean the same thing as the project being officially greenlit - but it's hard to imagine a scenario where this cast, a cast that was publically and enthusiastically invested in the film's success, wouldn't want to get back together and do it all again.
Crazy Rich Asians seemed to anticipate the potential for getting audiences invested in the next chapter of this story by dropping in a mid-credits scene that showed Astrid (Gemma Chan) glancing at an as yet unintroduced Harry Shum Jr. from across a party. Now, I haven't read China Rich Girlfriend, but I know a sequel hook when I see one, and considering how obligatory Astrid's storyline felt in the film when compared to the original Crazy Rich Asians novel (which integrates Astrid into the main plot much more smoothly), it only makes sense that the next film will have a stronger focus on her.
Are you excited to return to the opulent wealth of Singapore's ultra-wealthy with a familiar cast of lovable eccentrics? Are you intrigued to finally explore Astrid's character in a dimension that doesn't feel entirely tangential? Sound off in the comments, and we'll keep you updated as we hear more on China Rich Girlfriend 's probable 2020 release.
